Space Traveler Reveals Emotional Distress Following Wave of Harassment After Historic Trip

A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

Amanda Nguyen – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also carried well-known figures.

The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a public message, describing a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the period after the landing.

She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Buried Under Misogyny

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to female health science and performed experiments during the mission, said everything she had worked for – from her studies and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her background – was overshadowed under the deluge of gendered attacks.

She is best known for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.

Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

The Fog Begins to Lift

In the time since reaching space, she reports that the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she said.

She noted that amid the criticism, important benefits had come out of the flight, including spotlight on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

About the Mission

The fully automated New Shepard rocket lifted off from Texas in April, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that crossed the Kármán line of outer space.

The team of pioneers also included accomplished professionals from various fields.

The venture behind the flight is a private space firm launched by a well-known tech mogul.
