The fast bowler Set to Play a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The pace bowler has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector the selector has stated that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series kicking off on November 21 in Perth.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the likelihood of participating.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and various factors at play, aside from the physical problem, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he will feature a significant role. Hopefully starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of back injuries, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the contest.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches anyway. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for another day, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
